Economic Development

Guidelines for Presentation

Objective:

To become familiar with the challenges faced by a particular developing country, by understanding the country's background and historical environment and by applying economic theory to its unique situation.

Overview:

You will choose a country from a list of developing countries on which to do some independent research. You will research the background of the country with regard to population, culture, languages spoken, relevant historical developments, form of government, neighboring countries, religion(s), etc. You will sign up for one of three topical areas on which to focus.

*Population, fertility and mortality

*Human Capital

*Technology

*Culture

*Government

*Globalization and trade

*Income Inequality

*Foreign Aid

*Geography and/or Environment

You will be expected to discuss the topic you select using relevant facts from the country's historical or current experience to illustrate. For example, if you should choose The Republic of Sudan and Population as your topic, you might discuss (among other things) the effects of the country's 50 years of civil war on the demographics of the country. This presentation is not to be a report of facts that you gather from the internet and other sources, but should be an application of economic theory to those facts. Your presentation should be approximately 15 minutes long.
